Dali Telegram T- Shirt
This telegram was sent to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery by Salvador Dali in reference to him wanting Santiago el Grande sent to New York City, at the last minute, for his major solo retrospective exhibition at the Gallery of Modern Art in New York in 1965. The show was called: Salvador Dalí, 1910-1965, and it ran from December 1965 to March 1966. For understandable reasons (size, the rush, cost, etc..) the painting wasn't sent. The then Beaverbrook Art Gallery curator Stuart Smith went to the exhibition opening, and was publicly and very loudly called out by Dali as "an enemy of Dali", whereupon Smith promptly left the event.
The telegram reads: " Cordially request reconsideration of your decision concerning sending Santiago El Grande to my retrospectiv of the gallery of Modern Art in New York for December 15 opening. I consider this painting one of my capital work and this exhibition as the most important of my career. It would be regretable not to have the Beaverbrook name represented due to my long friendship with Lord and Lady Beaverbrook. I do hope that Santiago will be included and that you will honor us with your presence. Salvador Dali." Sizes small - extra large 100% cotton
